Problems with South Florida 3G Network

AT&T has been experiencing problems with its wireless 3G network in South Florida. It was down for most of the afternoon on a Friday and continued to experience fluctuations in service even after functionality was restored.

Customers from mid Broward County all the way down to Key West were affected by the network outage which was caused by an equipment failure. As AT&T continued to troubleshoot the issue they were switching customers between 3G signals and the slower 2G Edge network. This switching is an automatic feature built into the network to deal with an outage. AT&T phones are programmed to automatically switch to Edge when the 3G network is no longer available. Customers can also manually force a connection to Edge by restarting their phones or switching the network via their settings menu.
